The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is always looking for volunteers to help to preserve the natural resources of Barrington, Rhode Island and adjacent areas including water resources, streams, ponds, marshlands, woodlands, and scenic and natural sites, as well as the plant and animal life. Here are some ways you can get involved.
REGISTER FOR THE TUESDAY TRAILS TEAM
Join the Tuesday Trails Team
The Tuesday Trails Team for adults ages 18 and older meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 10 am to noon. On occasion, the date will be changed due to schedules and weather.
The Tuesday Trails Team plays a critical role in managing and maintain the properties owned by the Barrington Land Conservation Trust as well as Town-owned nature preserves.
Dozens of adult volunteers on the Tuesday Trails Team contributed more than 200 hours of time toward the stewardship of properties across the Land Trust’s holdings in FY24.
“What impresses me about the Tuesday Trails Team volunteers is their dedication and willingness to contribute their valuable time to our land management efforts,” says Victor Lerish, who manages the team. “We’re a very cohesive group. The members require little guidance — point them in a direction, let them know what our objectives are for the session, and they’re off to the races.”
Work includes removal of invasive plants, trail maintenance and construction, bridge repair, trash removal and beach cleanups. A regular commitment, though desirable, is not necessary. You’re welcome to join us even if you can only make a few events each year.
“They share a deep commitment to protecting the environment and possess a diverse knowledge base that is freely shared within the group,” says Victor.
It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, learn about local habitats, including best practices in managing these diverse properties, and to work alongside a great team. You’ll visit some hidden gems of undeveloped properties in town. Work is directed by an experienced project leader. All you need to bring is good shoes, work gloves, loppers and/or pruning shears if you have them, and a love of the outdoors.
Land Stewardship Program
Land stewards help monitor the properties owned and managed by the Barrington Land Trust. They monitor their designated property for invasive species, waste dumping and other encroachments. Land stewards may also participate in trail maintenance and clean up. To learn more about becoming a land steward, please contact stewardship@blct.org.
Thank you!
