Rhode Island Land Trust Days are coming to Barrington and the East Bay!
All August and September, Land Trusts across Rhode Island are offering nearly 60 guided walks and other events. With all these great opportunities to get outdoors, be sure to bring your family or bring a friend to enjoy the scenic views, green spaces and working farms. Participate in the Challenge by attending 4 or more events. Details for the Challenge and all events statewide can be found at RILandTrustDays.org
In Barrington, three events are offered in coming weeks:
Wed, Aug 14 4:30 pm Long Summer Family Fun Day
Co-hosted by Barrington Land Conservation Trust and Bayside YMCA
At Veterans Memorial Park and Bayside YMCA
Break out of your family’s weekday routine to savor a long summer afternoon filled with activities for you and your family! Arrive promptly at 4:30 PM at the Green Trail kiosk to participate in a guided walk and the Veterans Park bingo challenge (about 45 minutes). The Barrington Land Conservation Trust and the Bayside YMCA have worked in partnership with the Town of Barrington, the National Park Service’s River and Trails Program and other local partners for a number of years to improve the trail system at Veterans Memorial Park. Explore this amazing woods, wetlands and pond in the heart of Barrington!
Between 5:30 and 6:30 enjoy a Bayside Y style cookout with hamburgers and hot dogs plus a drink and a ‘side’ ( just $2 if you’re having a burger and $1 if you’re having a hot dog). The Y will also offer a variety of fun family activities such as obstacles and challenges, but be sure to come prepared with your swimsuits, ready to cool off in the YMCA’s large outdoor pool anytime between 4:30 pm and 7 pm.
Wed, Aug 14 6:30 pm First Quarter ‘Moving Moon’ Walk
Co-hosted by Barrington Land Conservation Trust and Bayside YMCA
At Veterans Memorial Park and Bayside YMCA
Arrive promptly at 6:30 PM at the Green Trail kiosk to participate in a guided walk (about 1 hour). If the skies are clear, we’ll enjoy the first quarter moon as it passes its meridian at 7 pm. The vision of moonlight through forest leaves should encourage you to get out and seize this summer evening. You will have the chance to ponder the eternal question “is the moon half full or half whatever-it-is-when-it-is-not-full”.
Note: You are welcome to participate in the earlier afternoon walk plus activities at the Bayside Y including cookout and swim prior to this walk. Only this evening walk has a rain/bad weather date.
Mon, Sept 2 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Hundred Acre Cove Paddle
Co-hosted by Barrington Land Conservation Trust, East Bay Rowing and Barrington Recreation Department
Seize the end of the summer with this pristine paddle in the third-largest salt marsh estuary in Rhode Island. It’s home to Rhode Island’s only known nesting area for northern diamondback terrapins, and it supports more than fifty species of birds. Naturalist will be on hand to educate us about the cove’s rich wildlife. You must register in advance for this event at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0545A9AE2BAA8-paddle Bring your own kayak or canoe, life jacket, sunscreen, bug repellent, and water. Rental kayaks can be reserved in advance for the day of the paddle at East Bay Paddle – a new, local, drop-off kayak rental company at: www.eastbaypaddle.com or via email at: eastbaypaddle@gmail.com
